Orange Diocese probes interfaith ‘concelebration’

The Orange Diocesse has placed a priest on leave pending an investigation into allegations of allowing a minister from another faith to concelebrate a Mass.

Ryan Lilyengren, a spokesman for the Diocese of Orange, said Father Augustin Escobar from St Norbert Catholic Church is alleged to have allowed a Presbyterian minister to receive and distribute communion during Mass on Sunday, Feb. 13, the Orange County Register reports.

Lilyengren said allowing ministers of other faiths to take part in a traditional Mass is called concelebrating, a somewhat serious offense.

“If another minister is up there with the priest that is celebrating the Mass and they’re kind of helping out, that’s concelebrating,” Lilyengren said. “They’re involved in the application of the Mass.”
