2015 NFL Schedule: Pope Francis requested the Eagles be out of town during his visit

(NJ.com) Pope Francis is coming to Philadelphia, and because of it, the Eagles will be hitting the road.

The 2015 NFL schedule was released on Tuesday, the result of 136 computers generating thousands of possible outcomes before the final one is chosen.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, one variable taken into consideration when making the final schedule? The visit of Pope Francise, who will be in Philadelphia from Sept. 22 to Sept. 27.

King writes:

Phillies conflicts in Weeks 1 and 4, and a letter from Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput to commissioner Roger Goodell (the archbishop spelled it “Rodger”) last July 8 respectfully requested the NFL not play in Philadelphia on the Sunday of Week 3, the day Pope Francis is scheduled to hold a mass for an estimated 2 million people on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway outside the Philadelphia Art Museum.

The NFL accommodated his request, as the Eagles will be in New York for a Week 3 matchup with the New York Jets during his visit. [more]
