D'Arcy criticizes ND protests

Published: April 15, 2009

Following a meeting with Notre Dame University President, Fr John Jenkins, Fort Wayne - South Bend Bishop John D'Arcy has called on Catholics to "stay away from unseemly and unhelpful demonstrations" against President Obama.

"I urge all Catholics and others of good will to stay away from unseemly and unhelpful demonstrations against our nation's President or Notre Dame or Father John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.," Bishop D'Arcy wrote.

"The Notre Dame community is well-equipped to supervise and support discussions and prayer within their own campus.

"I had a positive meeting this week with Father Jenkins, and I expect further dialogue will continue. These are days of prayer and hope when we should turn to the Risen Christ for light and wisdom.

"Let us all work towards a peaceful graduation experience for the Class of 2009 at our beloved Notre Dame," Bishop D'Arcy concluded.

  1. Finally a reasonable voice coming from the hierarchy on this issue. President Obama's policies are more in line with Catholic Social Teaching than any president's in recent memory. In fact, he's the only president to explicitly commit to finding strategies to reduce the need for abortion. The majority of Catholics see and understand this. The Church should be celebrating his speech at Notre Dame and not give credence to a tiny minority that seems to have a political ax to grind.

  2. Thank you, Bishop D'Arcy, and AMEN!

Something that became quickly neglected in this ordeal was the graduating class. They may or may not have had any choice in this matter, and now their years of work has been minimized to a controversy over the ceremony, rather than a celebration of their achievements.

May the Lord bless ND Class of 2009! And may their work continue to bring social justice and peace to all around them.

  3. Is it a "political ax" being ground or minimizing a graduating class' achievements to allow them to know and fully understand that their "speaker" voted to allow what the Supreme Court of the United States described in the following manner? "Dr Haskell went in with forceps and grabbed the baby's legs and pulled them down into the birth canal. Then he delivered the baby's body and the arms--everything but the head. The doctor kept the head right inside the uterus...The baby's little fingers were clasping and unclasping, and his little feet were kicking. Then the doctor stuck the scissors in the back of his head, and the baby's arms jerked out, like a startle reaction, like a flinch, like a baby does when he thinks he is going to fall. The doctor opened up the scissors, stuck a high-powered suction tube into the opening, and sucked the baby's brains out. Now the baby went completely limp... He cut the umbilical cord and delivered the placenta. He threw the baby in a pan, along with the placenta and the instruments he had just used." Gonzales v. Carhart, Sup. Ct. April 18, 2007. It is a given that the fifty million babies put to death in their mother's womb will never have the luxury of graduating from any institution--particularly the one dedicated to the Mother of Jesus. The "speaker" has proclaimed that he is and will be adding millions to that category of innocents. I believe it would be fitting for the entire graduating class to remember each and every one of them by rising and singing "Notre Dame Our Mother" at the conclusion of the "speaker's prompter-read speech. That will make their graduation more meaningful than that of any Notre Dame class in history. That will resound throughout the Administration Building and the world. That will glorify the infant Jesus and His Mother now caring for those untold millions. It will again make a Notre Dame degree something to be proud of. It will signal the commencement of an effort to retake the University from the secularists, who ignored warnings from the Catholic Bishops and others that the invitation and grant of an honorary degree would cause "extreme embarrassment to The University of Notre Dame." This is a "teaching moment" for the Class of 2009. GO IRISH God Bless each and every one of you... George Eng '59, JD "62

  4. This statement was aimed at disruptive outsiders, such as Randall Terry, not at the students and other ND community members who are planning peaceful and prayerful protests.
And "Catholic Social Teaching" does not mandate increased government spending and higher tax rates. There are myriads of ways to solve social problems, and faithful Catholics are free to follow their consciences in these matters. Obama is the most rabidly anti-life President this country has ever seen. His record is appalling on these issues, as is apparent from his 100% approval rating from NARAL and NOW.
And the Church should celebrate this speech...why?

  5. Well it sure looks like the good bishop has "sold out".. What did Jenkins threaten to do? Take away his football tickets.
The leftist-Marxists do not pray.. They do not hold vigils at the grotto, they do not go to Mass ... They Protest.. Look what happened at the University of North Carolina this week.. The leftist-Marxists drove a speaker off campus, before he could even address his audiance... So much for "Free Speech" so much for 'Civility"...Jenkins is trying to "shame" the protesters into going to the grotto and pray.. Well his kind would be the last to do that...
Don't let him shame you.. He has acted shamefully himself, and now is trying to 'defuse" the fury he caused... Now that the pot calling the kettle black.... Oops is that PC ?....
My belief is that we have to fight fire with fire... Protest..and protest loudly... Shout the babykiller off the platform.. Leave the Joyce center after he is shouted down, and go directly to the Basilica and the grotto and THEN PRAY for his soul....
Jenkins should not be allowed to say mass ever again... Receiving the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ from his hands is a sin........

  6. Hey, daniel jones, President Obama is EXPORTING abortion.

Planned "parenthood" is killing children in the womb at an INCREASING rate.

Your real name is Sebelius, isn't it?

  7. The remark of Daniel Jones that President Obama is committed to "finding strategies to reduce the need for abortion," says it all. Daniel, there is no need for abortion. There is no need to kill an innocent human being. Your way of speech sounds like it is taken straight from the NAZI planning meetings for the "final solution."

  8. Bishop D'Arcy,

May God Bless you for taking a stand against BO appearing at Notre Dame, receiving a degree and speaking. You will be in our prayers.
